Spider Head

This is one of those doodle pieces that I scribbled on from time to time. The concept finally congealed into something that is somewhat believable so I decided to post it. Conceived in nightmares, sculpted and polypainted in ZBrush 4R6 and composited in CS5.

Dasa-The Changed King

Dasa is a word that applies to the ancient Vedic kings of India if their behavior toward the people of their kingdom took a turn for the worse. This is a concept for a Vedic king that has turned away from Vishnu, and began practicing the dark magic of Kali. His kingdom suffered greatly from the widespread plague, famine and lawlessness that followed. He was in turn punished by Vishnu and was reborn as this king of suffering, complete with a cleft crown. For this design I was influenced by the colors of the Mantis shrimp, and Steve wang's Drake vampire from blade 3. As well as Hindu and Sinhalese artwork that I found in old NatGeo magazines. I wanted to see how baroque I could make this design without losing the visceral edge. I will most likely be reworking this entire sculpt as this was just a learning experience, and a fun one at that. Sculpted and polypainted in ZBrush 4R5. Composited and finished in CS5, with a dash of Painter 12 on top.

Spark

Frankenstein's monster must have thought that he would open his eyes to see pearly white gates opening, flanked by fair singing angels and frolicking cherubs. I can only imagine the rage and hurt he must have felt when the first thing he saw was a disheveled, insane Dr. Frankenstein screaming hysterically at his triumph. And as he looked down at his body, which was now a rotting carcass that serves as a prison for his soul he must have wept. I tried to capture the feeling of that waking moment in this piece. Sculpted and polypainted in ZBrush 4R5 and composited in PS CS5.

The Herald

Sculpted and polypainted in ZBrush and finished up in CS5. Experimenting more with the alphas and the mask by cavities and trying to achieve interesting patterns. Learned a lot from the Kurt Papstein tutorial on ZBrushcentral. This is my first post of the new year and I look forward to creating more works in 2013!

"There is no light, without darkness"

I never really do fan art, so I thought I would give it a try. This is a re-design of the Devil from the movie Legend, one of my favorite designs of all time. I wanted to move away from a red-skinned devil and go with more flesh tones and a very porous skin texture. I also wanted to play with the idea of his horns being malformed and cankerous. Hopefully it made him a little more menacing. Again inspired by the master creature designer Steve Wang.

A beautiful mind

Been working on this for the past few nights. Trying to get used to the poly-painting feature in ZBrush. I was hugely inspired by the great masters Jordu Schell and Carlos Huante.

Really inspired by creature designer Steve Wang on this one. His texturing is amazing. Sculpted in ZBrush and painted in CS5.

Just experimenting with new brushes and alphas. More of a "sketch" than a finished work. Really enjoying myself with this program.

Vamp creature bust

My first fully completed ZBrush sculpt. I have a long way to go with the program, but I look forward to the challenges.

Here are a couple of studies that I did not too long ago of David Bowie as "The Goblin King" and Thandie Newton as Dame Vaako. And a character from last semester's Sci-Fi fantasy class that got away from me. I cannot quite get her neckpiece right. Maybe it's time to learn some 3-D? Probably.

Beetle Armor

Thought it might be a cool idea to turn beetle shells into armor. I had fun with this one. Would like to do more in the future.
